In January 2011 the core themes of the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Berlin 2020 were revealed. The conceptual framework for IBA BERLIN TWENTY TWENTY is the result of a discussion process involving a group of seven experts - the
"Prae-IBA-Team". These core themes were used as the basis to develop a draft concept for IBA Berlin 2020 by mid-2011 in consultation with a range of stakeholders.
The
core themes were presented for public debate in the "IBA Studio" over the last few months. They forge a link between Berlin as a capital, its material and immaterial "assets", and global issues and challenges. The interplay of the city as a capital, as a blank spatial canvas and as a temporary, experimental space (Hauptstadt.Raumstadt.Sofortstadt) forms the core element of an urban planning strategy, which aims to provide concrete answers in terms of urban space to the issues of climate change, integration and participation and alternative economic models in times of public funding shortages.
An International Building Exhibition inevitably involves in-depth exploration of processes in general and processes of change from a psychological perspective. Nevertheless, the primary aim here is to produce concrete results in constructed urban space. All interested parties were, and are, encouraged to participate in the discussion to cultivate these ideas and help us devise and develop exciting projects.
The draft concept for IBA Berlin 2020 was presented to the public in July 2011.
