The Municipality of Rome

 

Rome lies on and around the historical seven hills in the tiber valley, 30 km from the tyrrenian sea and is surrounded south and north by vulcanic elevations and east by the appennine. The city covers an area of 1,285 km², of which the land use values are as follows:

  • built area
  • 29 %
  • highways and railways
  • 1 %
  • green urban areas, sport and leisure
  • 3 %
  • agricultural areas, pastures, and agriculture mixed with natural vegetation
  • 49 %
  • forest, shrub and/or herbaceous vegetation association
  • 15 %
  • beaches, dunes, are rocks and sparsely vegetated areas
  • 2 %
  • water bodies
  • 1 %

    A total area of 82,000 ha of green and landscape areas (natural protected areas, historical parks and city gardens, agricultural zones) is protected from the urban development, that is 64 % of the total area of the City of Rome. More than 4,000 ha are managed by the Municipal Public Garden and Historical Villas Service (Servizio Giardini); this area is in constant increase by means of new expropriations and acquisitions.

    Concerning biodiversity the following data are related to the area inside the Great Peripheric Highway (Grande Raccordo Anulare), which encompasses the main urban areas, with a surface of about 357 km²:

    The board of "Assessors" is the executive body of the roman administrative structure.

    Each "Assessor" is supported by the activity of a Department.

    The environmental matters are dealt by the Department X, Environmental and Agricultural Policies. The Department deals with the environmental problems in an integrated manner, linking the preservation and the reproduction of the environmental resources together with their economic management and social use in a framework of environmental sustainability.

    Other Departments deal with subjects having strong influence on the environment. It is the case of the Department VI, Urban Planning Policies, the Department VII, Transportation Policies, and the Department XII, Public Works Policies.
