They provide the basis for further discussion of the strategies and strategic spheres of the Urban Development Concept Berlin 2030. Conclusions: strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threatsEconomic prosperityBerlin has swerved onto a course of economic recovery, yet is not yet out of the woods. In light of Berlins structural problems, the situation is more challenging than in other large German cities. MoreSocial and spatial integrationThe city profits from its image as a diverse urbanity with a high quality of life. Individual areas of the city are simultaneously characterised by a high demand for housing as well as a high degree of social problems, posing challenges for the social cohesion of Berlins urban society. MoreEnvironment quality, quality of lifeBerlins quality of life is defined by its diverse cityscape. Air and noise pollution must be reduced. Demographic and climatic changes also require concepts for energy production, settlement development, mobility as well as for housing and the behaviour of the residents that are in tune with future needs. MoreCultural diversityBerlins cultural landscape is highly diversified, possessing outstanding cultural institutions with international renown, a very particular building culture marked by historical disruptions, and a creative scene with hardly a rival in terms of its diversity. MoreManagement and participationGrowth is a positive impulse, yet one that can also increase competition over use. Moreover, there are high demands by others to be involved in determining planning processes. Financial limitations only increase the challenge. On the whole, the need for effective management of Berlins urban development is ever more pressing. MoreDownload |
