Explanations and Imprint of the Map
  1. The emissions are shown here for 1989, for the first time combining the both halves of the city. In the meantime, the emissions, particularly in the eastern boroughs have been reduced considerably. On the other hand, due to the marked increased in traffic levels, the contribution of traffic to the overall emissions has increased considerably. The comparison between the calculated overall pollution as yearly average value for 1989 (Map 3.03.7) and the measured pollution levels 1991 (I1-value, Map 3.03.8) clearly show the effects of this development.
  2. Map 03.03.9 shows the 98%-value I2 as measure of short-term pollution; i.e. 98% of all values recorded are under the characteristic value I2.
  3. Nitrogen oxides are emitted mainly in the form of nitrogen monoxide. Under various climatic influences, the NO is quickly oxidised to the more hazardous NO2. No limits are set for NOx emissions in the TA Luft 1986. A different colour scale is therefore used.
