HISTORY

The idea for the establishment of the association developed in October 1984 in Paris in the course of a congress on "What kind of development for the major metropolitan regions at the dawn of the 3rd millennium?". Based on a Paris initiative, in April 1985 in Montreal Metropolis was officially founded by representatives of 14 capitals and metropolises. Every three years, in varying member cities Metropolis holds a major international congress.

1985 Official establishment of the network with 14 founder metropolises in Montreal
Michel Giraud, Paris, Île-de-France is elected first president
1987 2nd World Congress in Mexico-City: "A better life for all in metropolises"
1988 Symposium held in Madrid on "Major hazards and crises in the major metropolises"
1990 3rd World Congress in Melbourne: "Metropolises in ascendancy"
1992 Participation in the UN-conference on the environment in Rio de Janeiro
1993 4th World Congress in Montreal: "The citizen and sustainable development"
Establishment of the Technical Assistance Scheme exchanging experience expertise between the members: Paris supports Bucharest in the reorganisation and planning of the North Railway Station, Melbourne supports Mexico with planning techniques for the rapidly-growing areas of Mexico City
1994 Symposium held in Tokyo: "Taking the environment into account in urban planning in the 21st century"
1996 5th World Congress in Tokyo: "Metropolis for the people, seeking a solidarity among world citizens"
World Associations of Cities and Local Authorities Coordination (WACLAC) established based on the proposal of Metropolis during the Habitat II conference in Istanbul
1997 Establishment of the Metropolis Training Institute in Montreal
offering applied urban management training
1998 Joan Clos, Mayor of Barcelona succeeds Michel Giraud as President of Metropolis
1999 6th world congress held in Barcelona "A network of cities for world citizens"
Establishment of the Regional Secretariats of Africa, North America, Latin America and Caribbean, Asia-Pacific and Europe
2002 7th world congress held in Seoul "Metropolitan Governance in the New Millennium"
Establishment of 6 Standing Commissions and adoption of the Action Plan 2002-2005
